A case study was completed on a Rio Tinto mine called Kestrel which is located near Emerald, QLD. Being provided some the required information allowed for a numerical model to be generated in FLAC 2D. This project aimed to develop a numerical model within FLAC to accurately measure and model subsidence.
In this study, numerical modelling approaches are developed using the finite difference code FLAC3D 7.0. Critical factors such as in-situ stress regime, major geological structures, mining sequences, slanted surface topography and surcharge load due to the tailings storage facility are considered using 3-dimensional, elastoplastic analysis with ...

The goal is to use a mathematical model based approach to improve the quality of human life of the workers and operators with the enhancement of productivity by controlling the process variables. The book will illustrate the formulation of mathematical modelling for …
Abstract. This paper presents three case studies comprising failure mechanisms in phyllite mine slopes at Quadrilátero Ferrífero, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Numerical modeling techniques were used in this study. Failure mechanisms involving discontinuities sub parallel to the main foliation are very common in these mines.
While few numerical analyses of the effect of backfilling in highwall mining can be found, a limitation of the studies was the modelling of coal pillars used in highwall mining, . In this paper, modelling of coal pillars is based on a recent study into a pillar design for highwall mining, which proposes a new empirical pillar strength formula ...
comparison between the different modelling methods. Mine data (Woo et al., 2013) and numerical modelling (Vyazmensky et al., 2010), both show that caving-induced subsidence incorporates significant asymmetry in the ground deformation profile due to the presence of dipping geological structures. The continuum modelling was extended to 3-D using
Finally, a large number of theoretical and practical case studies will be discussed with application to underground and surface mining, civil, and petroleum engineering. Objectives By attending this course, participants will learn about the basic concepts of numerical modeling for rock fracturing processes, available solutions, their pros and ...
Longwall mining is one of the most widely practiced underground coal mining method. The behavior of the longwall gob is very critical in the understanding of the complex ground response to longwall mining. In the limited data available, the values of gob moduli used in numerical modeling ranged from 1,000 psi to over 300,000 psi.

Numerical modelling has been used to investigate a variety of problems in underground mining and tunnelling: subsidence induced by longwall coal mining; stresses generated when an open stope is filled cemented backfill and the stability of exposures created during subsequent mining of adjacent stopes; the interaction of two tunnels; and the effects of under-mining a pre …
Therefore, the objective of this work was to conduct a numerical modelling study to evaluate the room- and pillar dimensions, mining sequence, and required rock support when mining with the drift-and-slash method in Tara mine. The study was performed in a part of the mine called SWEX on level 725 m, which corresponds to 850 m below surface.
Continuum numerical modelling has become predominant in the mining industry to analyse the stability and estimate the overbreak in stope walls (Jing 2003).Mitri et al. mentioned that a simple criterion of stress confinement (minimum principal stress, σ 3) can be used to evaluate the stability and potential dilution of the stope hangingwall.. Following this idea, …

Numerical Modelling of Undermined River Valleys — A Case Study. W Keilich. 1, J W Lee. 1, N Aziz. 1. and E Baafi. 2 ABSTRACT. Ground subsidence due to mining is a common dilemma confronting the underground coal mining industry. The effects of underground longwall mining on river valleys have come under scrutiny, especially when
To solve such a problem, this paper presents a case study on the mining-induced energy redistribution in a coal seam adjacent to an extracted coal panel using a numerical method. In the numerical model, the double-yield model was used to simulate the gob material with consideration of goaf reconsolidation, and the results of the global model ...
Keywords: back analysis of elastic numerical modelling 1 Introduction The Callie underground mine (CUG) is situated in the Tanami desert of the Northern Territory, 530 km north west of Alice Springs. The mine has been in operation since 1998 and has produced an excess of 4 million ounces since production started.
It is rather complicated to predict the characteristics of strata response to mining operation in thick seams. However, a comprehensive evaluation of ground behavior is a prerequisite for maintaining efficient production, especially when the top-coal-caving method behind the face is applied. An analysis of the conditions of top coal has revealed that a 1.8m thick layer of coal just above the ...

these studies are focused on the energy change around under - ground small-scale excavations. At present, many research-ers have analyzed energy redistribution around underground mining excavations with numerical modeling methods. 10,20,21 Mitri22 assessed the mining-induced energy storage rate with
rock joint sets. A case study of Yanqianshan iron mine is considered and the corresponding 1:200 model rock slope was created for studying the rock joint effects on the strata movement and the subsidence mechanism of the slope. The physical model test results are subsequently verified with 3-D discrete element numerical modelling.
